Welcome to the 2025 TLT Symposium!

This annual event showcases ways that technology can be used to enhance teaching, learning, and research. The intent is give faculty and staff the opportunity to share how they are using technology in unique ways, network with other colleagues, and generate new project ideas. More information and event details can be found on the TLT Symposium Website.

Think First, Prompt Later: Optimizing Learning with Pretesting in AI-Assisted Learning
Saturday March 22, 2025 10:15am - 11:00am EDT
207
How can we ensure students truly learn when using AI tools like ChatGPT? This session presents evidence-based strategies for enhancing learning outcomes through pretesting—having students attempt to solve problems before consulting AI. Drawing from experimental research, we'll explore how this simple yet powerful approach significantly improves student understanding and retention.

Incorporating Feedback & Revision from an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Assistant into Undergraduate Biology Writing Assignments in Large and Small Courses
Saturday March 22, 2025 11:15am - 12:00pm EDT
207
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Assistants present opportunities and challenges for teaching writing. In 2023, instructors in a small 400- and two large 100-level courses integrated ChatGPT to provide feedback during students’ writing revision process. This session explores the pros and cons of using AI in writing instruction, focusing on the design of assignments in BIOL403 (Biological Writing and Communication for Research) and BIOL162/164 (Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory I and II). We will discuss the impact on student writing and share feedback from students and teaching assistants, offering insights into the integration of AI tools in writing-focused biology curricula.

Polylab: Unlimited Unique Parameters to Improve Engagement, Repetition, and Retention
Saturday March 22, 2025 1:45pm - 2:15pm EDT
207
Polylab is a system for creating multiple, unique, and meaningfully repeatable exercises to improve student learning. Polylab uses hash functions to create parameters in exercises. We can create infinite variations, for individual students, which prevents copy/paste cheating or for multiple practice assignments, with little overhead. You’ll learn about boring, non-repeatable exercises in cybersecurity that led to Polylab’s creation. You’ll see example exercises in networking, command line navigation, steganography (secret messages), and basic digital data representations. The session will help you create your own Polylab-inspired answer verification with Microsoft Forms, Google Sheets, and Power Automate, to collect answers and evaluate correctness.

AI as TA: Streamlining Course Development and Brainstorming Engagement Activities
Saturday March 22, 2025 2:30pm - 3:00pm EDT
207
This session explores how Microsoft Copilot can serve as a teaching assistant alternative, helping faculty save time while enhancing curriculum outcomes. Attendees will learn practical strategies for streamlining content creation and efficiently organizing materials. An interactive discussion and guessing game will demonstrate how AI can support course preparation and engage students. Participants will leave with an AI “recipe book” to help them on their own curriculum development journey with AI as TA.
